Can i run songs through itunes from an external concrete drive?

I am thinking of getting an external complicated drive to store a lot of my music. I own an 80 GB hard drive on my laptop and required to store more of my music on the external. I am a DJ and it would be a lot easier if I would own extra music on a portable external hard drive than on the laptop.
